Discordia (2023)

Discordia (2023) is a non-representational documentary film which is viewed from the perspective of an untethered water spirit. Returned from the sea, the drifting ghost travels silently east to west across the north of England and we follow her through the discord of midwinter, from Whitby to the Cumbrian coast. Expanses of snow and monolithic figures are observed throughout, as the spirit passes between viewer and object, hiding and obscuring all documented images. Gathered sound and field recordings collapse upon each other within ambiguous landscapes, while music eventually envelops the dreaming countryside. Carried by the tide, the track Lotus by Svitlana Nianio & Tom James Scott (from their recent album Eye of the Sea) drifts over the images and becomes a focal point of the film. Recoded throughout the autumn/winter of 2023 Discordia is an experiment in the conflicting motion of static composition and sustained movement.
